Enyimba (2017)

Yankari’s debut single is a track called "Enyimba" set to be released November 24th. Enyimba is a chant usually sung by the Igbo tribe (Nigeria) when it’s time for war or when extra motivation is needed to overcome an obstacle. Yankari spins a twist on it and tells a tale of an immigrant leaving his country for a better life in a “white man’s” country. What ensues is a journey of realisation when he comes to find that the grass is not always greener on the other side, as he faces various obstacles in the form of his new hosts and from his own people. It slightly mirrors the life the trio and many others have faced living as immigrants. This is an original tune mixing deep rooted Igbo culture, funky guitar lines, ancient rhythms and classic afrobeat. The band decided that a chorus of voices was necessary for Enyimba and reached out to a inner city youth project in Dublin, spending a day recording there. These young voices provided an emotional anchor to the piece and in doing so created a one time only event: Dublin youths singing an Igbo chant thousands of years old in 2017.
